Based in Frenchay, Bristol the University of the West of England caters for 23,000 students and houses seven different faculties. First built in 1975, the site has grown considerably since it first opened and a review of the existing signage revealed that it no longer fulfilled its original function, nor did it comply with the new DDA legislation.
Following a 2 week long site inspection by Mark Rose of MK Design, it was recommended that they install systems available from Bristol based Signscape Systems Ltd. Of paramount importance was the requirement for the panels to be easily interchangeable. This was achieved by the use of acrylic fronts and adaptors, allowing the panels to be removed and replaced with new panels whenever the need arose. It was also important that they came with a matt finish, again a necessary requirement to meet the DDA standard. Add to this the high quality of manufacture, there really was only one range of products that fully fitted the bill.
Create Signs and Graphics, who were awarded the UWE contract, managed the product and installed the 170 external directional and information signs on campus for what was probably the largest commercial sign project undertaken in Bristol in recent years. Many of the signs were supplied in component format, already cut to length, painted and ready to assemble. This enabled the strict deadlines to be met with ease and installation to be completed before the first intake of new students arrived.
The response from the University upon completion was extremely favourable. So much so that they are planning to implement the same systems on several other sites as well as complementing the existing external signs with internal signs.
